The current American Idol fascination is that is it an amateur contest or one that can show cases those talents that have not taken off as quickly as one would like? Apparently there are several contestants that have had prior record contracts and one individual that has won on Star Search. So why and how did they become one of the twenty four final contestants?
This current Pop Culture issues is of interest to me because I have been a huge fan of American Idol since it began. This new controversy does take away from the show because we are accustom to watching those individuals that have little to no experience singing on a stage or in front of large groups of people with the hopes of becoming a star.
There are four that have experience and had potential record deals. They are Michael Johns, Kristy Lee Cook, David Archuleta and Carly Smithson. I personally feel that they should resign and allow four other contestants an opportunity for stardom.
Based upon the controversy I decided to check on the rules. The official website states that the candidate must be a U.S .legal Citizen or a permanent U.S. residence and must be between the ages of sixteen and twenty nine. Surprisingly, the rules do not indicate that you could not have prior record deals or be an experienced singer.
This could mean that for the next season you could see the program opposition become more and more competitive. For those that watch in anticipation of seeing an amateur become a huge star may be disappointed. We may watch an experienced musician become noticed and or exploited depending on how they perform.
The fans will have to wait and see what this season brings. The anticipation of the underdog taking the lead may be a thing of the past.

I'm a huge AI fan too! I saw this and was surprised. This will be interesting to see how it plays out. When the season begins my kids and I always pick our favorite. Well mine is still on there and is not part of this so I cant wait to see how he does. David Cook is my pick. This always ties in my with my reality television theme. So we may be covering some of the same issues soon. Good post!
I like to watch because it interesting to see how the judges don't really make fair decisions, i have thought many times what the rules and regulations were. I guess now i can find out from where. That is amazing that only two rules are set to be a part or a contestant in the American Idol, huh!
I watched the last two nights. I am a bit disappointed as other fans are. There is really no one that stands out. I loved the show last year Dougherty was my favorite.
I am not an American Idol fan, but I did watch it this past week to see what the hoop-la was about. I love music and talent. This show did have that, but I was surprised with the judges. Thank goodness the fan base does make the ultimate decision. I do like Simon, usually his remarks are crude and he could sugar coat the inevitable but from what I seen. Simon was right on the money. He just isn't politically correct how he goes about it; but isn't that what makes the show a hit? Does our culture thrive on someone being truthful. Being truthful isn't always pretty. If Simon sugar coated his words about the talent or the lack there of, would this reality show be a hit? I wonder....
I liekd your topic. American Idol, although I have issues with it, is pop culture. I never got onto the reality TV band wagon mainly because I don't watch that much tv. But when my boyfriend was in Iraq I watched it because I would stay home so that I could talk to him online. I got hard core into American Idol. I watched the season with Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood first. I was a Bo-aholic! LOL. But I was right there with everyone else. The next year I watched and was all for Chris Daughtry. After he loss I got sick of it and haven't watched it again. Partly because I think the show is completely fake and because I have grown out of it. I am shocked that it is still surving. Most of the reality TV shows don't last long with our short attention spans.
I havent watched any of this years but I listen to a morning radio show that is an idol affliate so they talk about it. I am sure I will hear samples of the singers on there. I am intertested although I don;t want to really admit it. Hahaha!
I have to say that this show begins to annoy me during the season. I really don't even like to watch it until the final 5 or 6 weeks. However, my husband is fasinated with it. He and my son will watch it from the first night to the finale. They enjoy it more I think because music is so much more a part of their lives.
The fact that American Idol is a cultural icon is a true fact. However I wonder how many people know that the show did not originate in the United States? Also, how many know that there are many, many countries that have their own version? I think that American Idol has really become an universal icon that is viewed and enjoyed around the world.
